Vendors are already well on their way to helping cable usher in the next generation of high-speed data with DOCSIS® 3.1-capable modems. The DOCSIS® 3.1 specification is designed to support Gigabit-per-second speeds and improve the spectral efficiencies of the available spectrum in existing Hybrid Fiber-Coaxial (HFC) networks without changes to the existing cable plant.
Through DOCSIS® 3.1, modems will be capable of exceeding Gigabit-per-second (Gbps) speeds on the downstream by utilizing tools such as Low-Density Parity Check (LDPC) error correction, Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) encoding, higher-order modulation orders, and the elimination of many RF guard bands. DOCSIS® 3.1 will allow the cable industry to more efficiently use the existing spectrum and increase the capacity at minimum cost. This speed and reduced network delay bring about the ability to transmit up to 50 percent more data over the same spectrum, on existing HFC networks.
Early-adopting cable operators anticipate the ability to offer their customers Gigabit services late in 2015, with most rolling it out across their networks in 2016 and 2017. As the industry is on the edge and reaching for the next level of data speeds, DOCSIS® 3.1 capabilities prompt compelling operations questions such as, Is your network ready for 3.1 enhancements or completing implementation of 3.0? What new services and content will you be able to deliver to your customers with 3.1? How will this technology revolutionize your company’s throughput? Will you run or stroll down the path of transition to all-IP video?
With the new DOCSIS® 3.1 capabilities, it’s more critical than ever to keep your skills sharp. SCTE can teach you the elements and implementations with its new “DOCSIS® 3.1 Essentials” course. You can also build your knowledge with the “DOCSIS® Engineering Professional (DEP)” course and become an SCTE-certified professional by passing the DEP exam. Prepare and learn more at www.scte.org/dep.
Cable operators and vendors can join the SCTE Standards Program and participate in HFC Readiness for DOCSIS® 3.1, which is creating operational practices to ensure the cable operators have the tools necessary to optimize the performance of DOCSIS® 3.1 on their networks.
